Xbox 360 RROD - Which Xbox 360 Red Ring Of Death Repair Is Best?

Well once I began attempting to find a fix for my Xbox 360 RROD, I realised I was overwhelmed by all the information available on the market. You will find a gazillion sites, each selling their instruction manuals (normally $24.95. You can get some for free) and there are also the multitudes of YouTube videos claiming to have found the magic cure. The three that I am about to review are what seem like the most famous (and sometimes most ridiculous).

Number #1 - The Towel Trick - It goes something like this: You take the hard drive off, cover the entire unit in a towel to prevent the surplus heat from escaping, turn the console on approximately 15 minutes to cook (some instructions advise 1 hour), shut it down, unplug it for an hour, plug it back in and as promised it works. But why? I haven't heard a good explanation yet. Here is one of the explanations..."the console gets so sizzling hot that it melts the solder that was cracking to the induce the red lights in the first place"..... Here's a couple of possible dangers as talked about in the same instructions "could perhaps damage other parts of the Xbox".... "The device could catch on fire it gets so hot". I've got to say I am going to rate this as the 2nd most silly Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death fix of the three in consideration. Suggestion: Do not use this fix.

Number #2 - The Ice Bath - I would not even desire to explain how to do this. Simply, a rubbermaid tub is filled with ice water, some vinegar is put in, the Xbox 360 is unplugged and submerged in the water/vinegar mix. After so many minutes the console is removed, drained of water and immediately plugged back in. Need I say more. I actually heard of a kid who attempted this and was severely shocked. This as lots of other fixes was presented as a youtube video. Really it is quite reckless and should be deleted. This fix is the most silly fix of the three in consideration. Recommendation: You should not even give thought to employing this fix for those who value your life.

Number #3 - X-Clamp Fix - Here is the only genuine fix I've noted thus far. It will be as fixed as it gets. Do not use it if however your Xbox 360 is still under warranty. Send the console back to Microsoft and let them honor the warranty. Nevertheless, in the event the seal is broken and/or it isn't under warranty this fix is the best longterm option. This is actually the repair in a nutshell; you get into the console, remove the x-clamps, clean up the existing thermal paste, put new thermal paste on, swap the x-clamps by using screws and washers, reassemble the machine, overheat, let it cool-down and it works on approximately 90% of the units.
